tabThis Week in Airpower History
Oct. 8,  1943: Eighth Air Force launched the first of five maximum effort raids through Oct. 14, 1943, otherwise known as "Black Week" over northern and central Germany. More than 1,350 B-17s and B-24s raided targets during Black Week, flying unescorted over enemy airspace. Approximately 20 percent of the names on the Tablets of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial are of Airmen declared Missing in Action during Black Week.
