Prior to your PCS to Alconbury

Prior to your PCS, we recommend you visit the Relocation Team at your current Airman & Family Readiness Center, for information to assist you in your move to England. There is much information available to you, either in the form of a class, a briefing or on-line at Air Force Crossroads, http://www.afcrossroads.com/ and Military Homefront http://militaryinstallations.dod.mil/ismart/MHF-MI/home.jsp.

Do You Have A Sponsor? 
The RAF Alconbury Sponsorship program strives to ensure that you are assigned a sponsor in a timely manner, receive information to assist with your move, and that your sponsor assists you as much as possible. Your sponsor is the key to your successful PCS and should be your first stop for information concerning travel to RAF Alconbury.

Sponsor Responsibilities: 
Your assigned squadron at Alconbury/Molesworth/Upwood will appoint a sponsor to help you. If the sponsor does not contact you directly, you may have to obtain the contact information through your new squadron's orderly room, or your local orderly room. If you experience difficulties please email our Alconbury Relocation Team at 423FSS.dpfr@alconbury.af.mil call DSN: 314 268 3557, or commercial: 011 44 1480 843 557.

General Information 
The assigned sponsor is your point of contact for obtaining information and should be there to assist you in getting settled here in England. You can direct any questions to your sponsor. Keep in mind that when sponsor is assigned to an active duty member with a family, they do not only sponsor the active duty member, they will address the needs of the entire family including pets.

Sponsors can provide information on local transportation modes that can save you valuable time and hassle upon arrival in London. Be sure to contact them for assistance and keep them informed of your travel plans.

Post Office Box 
Your sponsor is responsible for obtaining a Post Office box for you to start redirecting your mail. Please provide them a copy of your orders so they can accomplish this task..

If you wish to secure your P.O.Box yourself, provide the following details to the Post Office as well as a copy of your orders: 

- Name of military member (first, middle and last)
- Rank
- Current DSN
- Current Unit and Address
- Report No Later Than Date
- Married or Single
- Dependent first and last names

The Post Office cannot process a request for a personal mailbox without this documentation, and the information you submit is protected by 5 USC 552a (Personal Data Privacy Act of 1974).

Tip: During your outbound briefings inquire about how to get reimbursed for mailing items.

General Delivery services are provided for 30 days. After this timeframe, the mail will be returned to sender. The temporary/general delivery mailing address for Alconbury is:

All TDY personnel should go to the Customer Service Desk at the Post Office as soon as possible after they arrive so that a General Delivery File can be set up for them.

The Military Postal System provides most of the same services as the United States Postal System, but you may expect your mail to take a bit longer to be delivered because of the extra distance it must travel. Priority packages and letter-class mail arrive in approximately 12 days. Magazines and surface mail may take from 4 to 8 weeks. Express mail service may be purchased for delivery to CONUS in 3 to 4 days. Delivery confirmation is not yet available at Air Force Post Offices. Lodging Arrangements: 
Your sponsor should also make Lodging arrangements for you. If they don't, or you want to confirm that they have, simply contact the Lodging Office at DSN: 314-268-6000 or 011 44 1480 826 000. You can make reservations up to a year in advance; however lodging does require a copy of your orders. If you are not able to stay on base then the Lodging Office has a list of off-base establishments. If you must stay off base then make sure to obtain a non-availability slip from the Lodging Office. This will ensure that Finance will reimburse you.

Make certain that any off-base Temporary Lodging Facility is within your per diem rate by visiting: https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/allowcol.html. This site will also provide you with information on your Overseas Housing Allowance and Cost of Living Allowance. The Finance Office at your current base can also supply you with these rates.

Your sponsor is there to help you, however we cannot stress enough how important it is for you to keep in contact with your sponsor and to make them aware of when you will be arriving. Sponsorship is a two-way street!

The Airman & Family Readiness Center
Family Services Loan Locker: Items are available to military families and single members moving in or out of RAF Alconbury and those temporarily assigned here. While you are waiting for your household goods, we have pots, pans, dishes, irons, toasters, coffee makers and basic lines(sheets, pillows and blankets. Bring in one copy of your orders and we will take care of the rest. Commissary coupons will also save money on your purchases, and these are valid for 6 months beyond the expiration date.

Spouse Employment
One of the first things spouses are concerned about is where they can find work. Make an appointment with us and learn about employment on base and in the local community.

Newcomers Oreintation 
Newcomers Orientation is currently held twice monthly, usually on the 2nd and 4th Thursday. It is a mandatory orientation for all AD and civilian employees. We strongly encourage all family members and contractors to attend.
The Newcomers program is now a one-stop shop for all your in-processing needs. Having passed your computer based UK Driving test, you will be able to secure your licnece and gas card, receive Tri-Care brief and turn in your medical records. You will also receive helpful information for both on and off-base policies, services, and facilities. Sponsors can contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center to register inbound personnel for Newcomers Orientation.

Relocation Services 
The Airman & Family Readiness Center has information about theTribase area and neighboring communities available for newly arriving members, as well as Airmen and families preparing to depart the area. Our relocation services include individual counseling with a personalized needs assessment, Smooth Move Seminars, and seminars for buying & selling homes both within the UK and for those returning to the United States. We can assist with pre-move workshops to help Airmen and families to better understand the permanent change of station process and acquaint personnel with many agencies available to assist. 

Sponsorship Program 
Sponsors provide vital support to Airmen, Civilian employees, and their families relocating to the tribase area. The Airman & Family Readiness Center provides training and materials for sponsors so newcomers know what to expect before they arrive in the local area and report to their new duty station. Sponsorship training workshops are offered in multiple each month, so please call to reserve your seat.

This Sponsor Training program provides a great deal of information designed to assist your Sponsor in providing the support your and your family require in making a smooth transition to our community. Download and use the 501st Sponsorship Checklist which is located in the fact sheet area to assess what your concern might be and discuss in detail with your assigned sponsor. This checklist can function as a "to-do" list and again help the two of you stay on target through this process.
