Happy
#FairfordFriday
! This week&
#39;s
history tidbit has to do with the mighty British-built
#Concorde
‘002’, which made its maiden voyage from Filton to RAF Fairford in early 1969. The momentous 22-minute flight was piloted by Brian Trubshaw and John Cochrane. Emerging from the cockpit at Fairford, Brian Trubshaw remarked ‘It was wizard – a cool, calm and collected operation’. For the next two and a half years, there was an extensive development programme at RAF Fairford, enabling it to quickly achieve Mach 2 flight – twice the speed of sound.

You&
#39;ve
heard of
#USAFEGRIT
by now. You&
#39;ve
heard our senior leaders discuss its importance. But how are our Airmen being personally impacted by
#GRIT
, and how is it connecting Airmen to each other and to the mission? “Operation GRIT is something that needs to be taken outside of the training environment and be applied daily in and out of the work center,” said Staff Sgt. Laura Gonzalez, 501st Combat Support Wing Emergency Management specialist. ”It will help Airmen, but only if the principles and concepts are actively applied and not just a soundbite. Each and every Airman is a leader, which the Air Force needs now more than ever. It takes actions, not a title, to be a leader.” Gonzalez stays
#resilient
through maintaining balance mentally, spiritually, and physically, focusing on controlling the things she can control, and practicing daily gratitude. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

Welcome to
#FairfordFridays
, where we&
#39;ll
share a little bit of Fairford&
#39;s
storied history each week in honor of the base&
#39;s
75th anniversary. Did you know that 54 years ago, the beloved RAF Red Arrows formed at RAF Fairford? The Royal Air Force’s world famous aerobatic team started life in the Cotswolds in 1965. They performed their first display there, and were based at the Gloucestershire airfield until moving just up the road a year later to RAF Kemble in 1966. Stay tuned for more next Friday &

The 501st paid their respects on August 3rd at the re-dedication memorial for the crew of the B-17G Flying Fortress "Miss Liberty Bell." The ceremony commemorates the brave men who lost their lives when they crashed near the village of Wymington returning from their mission over Germany 75 years ago. Thank you to the community of Wymington for treating our fallen service members with the same honor and respect as your own.

Thanks for our Airmen at RAF Fairford and RAF Welford for hosting Chief Keene and I last week. The work you do is incredibly far-reaching - from enabling global strike out of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only bomber forward operating location to equipping the theatre’s second largest munitions storage facility. It’s great to see the pride you each take in your work on a daily basis. -Col Wendt
