RAF FAIRFORD, England -- Airmen from the 501st Combat Support Wing, 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron, as well as distinguished guests and local community members, gathered Aug. 29 at RAF Fairford to honor U.S. Air Force Capt. David “Hawk” Hawkens, during the 30th anniversary of his fatal U-2R crash.
Hawkens was killed Aug. 29, 1995, when his aircraft experienced a mechanical malfunction shortly after takeoff on a NATO reconnaissance mission. The ceremony marked three decades since the mishap and paid tribute to his sacrifice, service and legacy.
