University of Maryland University College -- Europe opened up a National Test Center here March 11, providing more educational options to the Menwith Hill community.

"The NTC is a great asset to students, as they will have a full range of CLEPs and DSSTs, offering immediate scoring," said Eddie Kernoghan, 421st Air Base Squadron deputy chief of education services. "Leslie Lobos and her team have worked very hard to put this together."

Test proctors from Royal Air Force Lakenheath and RAF Alconbury will be on hand to administer tests once a month for CLEPs and DSSTs, with two time slots each date.

For one MHS member, this is an opportunity for her and others to continue with higher education as loss of tuition assistance and sequestration loom.

"Right now I'm taking classes. But, if they take away TA, and I'm not able to do that, then I'll take more CLEPs," said Tech. Sgt. Carla Benton, MHS Clinic. "Being here, it's also convenient as opposed to having to drive down to Alconbury, and convenience is everything to me. With TA and sequestration issues, CLEPs will be a better and cheaper way to go in the way of educational benefits."

The first test date is scheduled for March 25, including time slots at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Test dates in the future include April 22 and May 20.

Pearson VUE and GED tests will also be available; however, these will need to be scheduled separately from set testing days.
