The 423rd Air Base Group received a new commander during a change of command ceremony here June 7.

Lt. Col. Michael Reiner took command of the 423rd ABG, which is responsible for providing the full range of operational, logistical, medical, communications support, and community services to more than 6,000 military and civilian personnel and their families at RAF Alconbury, RAF Molesworth, RAF Upwood and the 426th Air Base Squadron at Stavanger, Norway. He also serves as host to 11 multi-service and multi-national tenant units. Colonel Reiner takes over from Col. Amy Hammond, who retired after 25 years of military service.

Before the orders were published, Col. Brian Kelly, 501st Combat Support Wing commander, said one of the constants in the military is change.

"I believe changes in leadership are healthy for any unit and are a natural part of our military lives and culture," said Colonel Kelly. "Change allows us all to re-examine ourselves, our roles, our commitments and our contributions to the mission and change provides a unit an opportunity to excel to even higher levels."

While Colonel Kelly said change is good, he believes few are better qualified to lead the 423rd ABG into the future, and is thrilled to have Colonel Reiner and his family in the 501st CSW.

"His experience and performance were rewarded (for his past assignments) as Lt. Col. Reiner has already been selected for promotion to Colonel; early, and ahead of his peers in recognition of his leadership talents," Col. Kelly said. "He joins the team with a wealth of leadership experience and enthusiasm and we look forward to even greater things from the 423rd under his command."

Colonel Reiner said he was impressed with the many great accomplishments the 423rd has achieved during the past two years.

"Together we will push forward and continue to improve our world-class support to our mission partners and the families of this community," Colonel Reiner said. "Our performance will be measured by the success of these customers as they perform critical intelligence and communications missions in support of U.S. and NATO security objectives."

However, Colonel Reiner said he will hold the Airmen in the 423rd accountable to continue providing world-class support.

"The key attribute you need to know about me is this: I am passionate about excellence and intolerant of the status quo," Colonel Reiner said.

The 423rd's mission partners will continue be one of the group's top priorities, said Colonel Reiner.

"I am committed to providing our mission partners with a safe and secure operating environment, reliable infrastructure, and an enjoyable community in support of your missions, your personnel and your families," Colonel Reiner said.

"I am honored and excited to lead this group," said Colonel Reiner. "Now let's get to work!"
