Cambridgeshire firefighter recognized by 423rd CES

RAF ALCONBURY, United Kingdom -- A local Cambridgshire British firefighter was honored by the 423rd Civil Engineer Squadron during an Air Force coining tradition March 18 at the RAF Alconbury Fire Department.

Joe Ruane, 423rd CES deputy fire chief, presented the coin to Kevin James, for his efforts in educating the base populace on fire prevention during the last year.

The idea to present him with a squadron coin was a way squadron leadership could display their gratitude for his efforts, said Mr. Ruane.

"He (Mr. James) did a lot to help train our servicemembers, civilian employees, students and the general public about fire safety and prevention," Mr. Ruane said. "From a U.S. fire department viewpoint, we wanted to show our appreciation for his work."

Being a part of a U.S. servicemember tradition gives a sense of pride to Mr. James, a former member of the Royal Air Force Regiment.

"It's quite an honor to be recognized for actually doing your job," Mr. James said. "What I feel is important is getting the education out to the public, especially seeing the younger people enjoying themselves while learning."
