Combining secure destruction of classified material with eco-friendly recycling, Marine Corps Colonel Pete Devlin, JIOCEUR Analytic Center (JAC) Commander, tossed the first bag on the conveyor of the massive humming machine.

Inaugurating the new RAF Molesworth Destruction Facility, the Colonel watched as first the bags were converted into a powder-like dust blown through pipes before being compacted by a briquetting press into round briquettes about the shape and size of a can of tuna.  The resulting briquettes are only 10% of the original volume (see photos),   In addition to the new paper disintegrator, another machine was noisily turning excess computer hard drives into small shards of metal.

According to JAC Chief of Security, Mr. Joe Bowen, the machine can destroy a half ton of paper per hour, equivalent to hundreds of 'burn' bags of classified paper. The device can easily consume bound books as large as telephone directories. During the inaugural run, the facility processed over 4 tons of material in just over seven hours.

The briquettes and metal shards are suitable for recycling, potentially reducing the carbon footprint of the JAC dramatically as compared to the prior method of destruction which involved burning of paper, and manual destruction of hard drives.
