As you can see it is that time of year again, where it is getting colder and darker by the day. The winters in England are unpredictable! The key to a safe Winter season is to ensure you are ready.

Before the journey
 Only venture out when it is essential
 Check weather forecast and if any delays are expected
 Check your vehicle to ensure it is working properly (lights, fluids, tire pressure and tread etc.)
 Don't use the peep hole method, clean your windshield completely (It's also a UK law)
 Some key items to keep in your vehicle (ice scraper and de-icer, emergency kit, jump cables, first aid kit, water and food)
 Ensure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up

Most vehicle mishaps that happen this time of year are due to speed. Slow down and get to your destination safely. Just because there is a certain speed limit does not mean that it is safe to go that speed. When you are heading toward curves or bends, slow down well ahead of time and cruise through it, avoiding any sudden actions. Always expect the unexpected and be mindful of snow plows, salt trucks, pedestrians, cyclists and horseback riders.

The distance it takes to come to a complete stop becomes much greater this time of year. Stay well behind the vehicle in front of you as stopping distances can be 10 times greater then on dry roads. Avoid driving on back roads as they are not salted or plowed like main access roads and tend to be more shaded with trees and bushes and may be icier than main roads.

Another part of living in the UK is the fog. Fog can be very patchy--even if it seems to be clearing, you can find yourself in a patch of thick fog. Use your headlights as required but be cautious that others may not be using theirs. Keep a good distance away from vehicles in front of you; rear lights can give a false sense of security.

I'm sure these are things you have heard a million times but just remembering some of these tips may prevent an accident or better yet just may save your life.
