Alconbury students visit Poland Published April 17, 2008 By Shannon Pitzer Club Beyond RAF ALCONBURY -- Students from Alconbury's Club Beyond had opportunity to interact with the people of Żory, Poland. During the five-day visit, they met with middle school and high school English classes in one of the local schools; giving the Polish students opportunity to practice speaking. It also gave students an in-depth look at life in Poland. Club Beyond students built a number of benches for the soccer field at the school, and celebrated the completion with a cookout - feasting on Polska Kielbasa. In addition, the they helped a local church with a Bible School for the children they have been reaching out to in their neighborhood. The bible school children responded in spite of the language barriers - giving Club Beyond students Polish names and teaching to count and name the colors in Polish. They also taught the visitors some of their traditional Polish games. As stories were told from the Bible in English, a translator told them in Polish while Club Beyond students acted out the parts. While in Poland, the students had the opportunity to join with about 200 other students from military bases in England and Europe for a time of worship and teaching. Club Beyond students had many experiences -- a sobering visit to Auschwitz, a talk with a teacher who had lived through Martial Law and Solidarity in Poland in the 80's, a live concert with a Spanish singer living in Poland, Daily Mass in the local Catholic Parish, a worship service in Polish.
