The Base Fire Department at RAF Fairford played host to a group of students from Cirencester College recently.

The students are undertaking a course in Travel and Tourism part of which covers the duties and responsibilities for Cabin Crew on commercial airlines. Aspects of this module relate to emergency procedures and it was with this portion that the Fire Department were able to assist.

The students gained valuable insight into a wide range of skills. These included properties of fire, extinguishing methods, basic fire prevention, actions in the event of fire, basic medical first aid, and protection against infectious diseases. The use of essential medical equipment such as the defibrillator, oxygen kit and suction unit were demonstrated. They were also allowed to take part in practical use of fire extinguishers and observed a crash truck deployment and production exercise on the base Mobile Aircraft Fire Training facility.

The morning visit was a great success with all the students expressing their gratitude and how much they had enjoyed the visit, having learnt a great deal.

Their tutor, Mrs. Karen Lucker, was equally grateful and said it was a tremendous opportunity for the students to enhance their course. She said the training and demonstrations had helped to exemplify the theory input the students receive at college. Its one thing to read it from a book but quite another to see it with your own eyes.
