RAF Alconbury fire emergency services reminds residents to 'Prevent Kitchen Fires'

RAF ALCONBURY, United Kingdom --  It's time for Fire Prevention Week and from Oct. 7-11 the 423rd Civil Engineer Squadron fire emergency services is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to remind residents to 'Prevent Kitchen Fires.'

During this year's fire safety campaign, fire departments will be spreading the word about the dangers of kitchen fires - most of which result from unattended cooking - and teaching local residents how to prevent kitchen fires from starting in the first place.

According to the latest NFPA research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen - more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries.

"Often when we're called to a fire that started in the kitchen, the residents tell us that they only left the kitchen for a few minutes," said Chief Ralph Barone, 423rd CES fire department fire chief. "Sadly, that's all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. We hope Fire Prevention Week will help us reach folks in the community before they've suffered a damaging lesson."

The following is a list of events the 423rd CES fire department will host for Fire Prevention Week:

Oct. 7:
· 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. - Sparky the Fire Dog will greet people at the RAF Alconbury main gate
· 10 to 11:30 a.m. - Grease Pan (Live Fire) Demonstration in housing area at 1173A Cocoa Lane
· Noon to 1 p.m. - Informational booths at Bowling Center and NYPD
· 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Grease Pan Fire Demonstration in Housing Area at 1173A Cocoa Lane
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Various fire drills throughout RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Fire extinguisher classes at Base Education Center and RAF Molesworth fire station

Oct. 8:
· 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. - Sparky the Fire Dog will greet people at the RAF Molesworth main gate
· 8:30 to 10 a.m. - Fire extinguisher computer simulator (hands-on) at Daily Grind
· 10 to 11:30 a.m. - Alconbury Elementary School field trip to fire station
· Noon to 1 p.m. - Informational booths at Commissary and NYPD
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Fire extinguisher classes at Base Education Center and RAF Molesworth fire station

Oct. 9:
· 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. - Sparky the Fire Dog will greet people at the RAF Alconbury main gate
· 8:30 to 10 a.m. - Courtesy blood pressure checks at Daily Grind
· Noon to 1 p.m. - Informational booths at Commissary and NYPD
· 1 to 2:30 p.m. - Alconbury Elementary School field trip to fire station
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Fire extinguisher classes at Base Education Center and at RAF Molesworth fire station

Oct. 10:
· 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. - Sparky the Fire Dog will greet people at the RAF Molesworth main gate
· 8:30 to 10 a.m. - Commercial cooking equipment training at Stukeley Inn
· 9 to 10 a.m. - Grease Pan Fire Demonstration in Housing Area at 1425A Oak Drive
· 10 to 11:30 a.m. - Alconbury Elementary School field trip to fire station
· Noon to 1 p.m. - Informational booths at Commissary and NYPD
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Various fire drills throughout RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth
· 3 to 4 p.m. - Fire extinguisher classes at Base Education Center and at RAF Molesworth fire station

Oct. 11:
· Noon to 1:30 p.m. - The RAF Alconbury fire department is hosting an open house; chili cook-off will take place plus an automobile extrication demonstration
· 4 to 4:30 p.m. - Parade through housing areas
