Welford Memorial
Annual memorial service at Memorial Grove at RAF Welford for an RAF 101 Squadron Avro Lancaster DV 290, which crashed at RAF Welford on March 31, 1944; eight men were killed. These are among the 1,200 lost from 101 Squadron in WW II. Overall, more than 70,000 RAF personnel were killed or missing in action in WW II, 47,293 from Bomber Command. The Memorial Grove at Welford was established in 1993, 50 years after it became a joint RAF-USAF base. Ceremony participants included 420th Air Base Group Commander, Col. Joseph Dill and 420th Munitions Squadron Commander, Maj. John Willoughby, a formation from the 420 MUNS at RAF Welford, a color guard from 101 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, the Wantage Branch of the RAF Association, the 101 Squadron Association, the Parachute Regimental Association’s Berkshire Branch and the Ridgeway Military and Aviation Research Group, along with local clergy.
