Douglas Stewart Newton, retired flight test equipment officer, and Richard “Dick” Hughes, retired aircraft engineer, pose for a photo in front of a Concorde aircraft display board. RAF Fairford was a testing ground for Concorde, a British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner in service 1969-2003. It is one of only two supersonic commercial transports ever flown. Its maximum speed was over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph at cruise altitude).
